Aging In Place & Remodeling For Seniors in Bellevue

What does it mean to design for aging in place?

Simply put, aging in place means choosing to stay in your home as you age and your abilities change, rather than moving into senior living housing. Many people choose to stay in their homes because they are close to their community, family and friends; they are comfortable in their home and have many memories there; or it may make more financial sense to stay in their home.

While there are many factors that make aging in place a positive experience, when it comes to design, there are many considerations to think about. While designing for aging in place is becoming more common, most homes were not built with this in mind. If you are thinking about staying in your home, you may want to consider a remodel that will make staying in your home as you age more comfortable. Here are some questions to consider if you are thinking about a remodel project specifically for aging in place:

  • Does your home have stairs or other mobility barriers that may become more challenging as you age?
  • Is there enough space in the bathroom, hallways, doors and other areas to accommodate a walker or wheelchair?
  • Can light switches, faucets, window openings and electrical outlets be easily reached?
  • How much of your flooring is carpet, hardwood or laminate?
  • Are there transitions between flooring types that may cause someone to trip?
  • Can doors be easily opened, closed and locked?
  • Is the home low maintenance or does it require considerable upkeep inside and out?
  • Will you be able to easily enter and exit your bathtub or shower if stepping up becomes more challenging?

In order to make your home more comfortable for aging in place, you may need to make minor modifications or may need to consider a larger remodeling project. In addition to the questions above, there are many more factors to consider when making the decision to stay home.
