Beauty and functionality were top priorities for this family’s kitchen remodel. The homeowners of this split-level home with a compartmentalized main level envisioned an open plan space where they could watch after their young children playing while cooking, entertain in the backyard off the dining room and utilize the space more effectively.

Scope:

To get from the eat-in kitchen to the living room, one took a path through a formal dining area or the entry to the home. A non-load-bearing wall was removed, and a large island was added in its place. Windows were moved and enlarged to brighten the space. The large window in the dining area was replaced with French doors that provide access to the upper level of the backyard.

Because of the open floor plan, updates were required in the living room and entry. These included a facelift for the fireplace with drywall covering the original painted bricks and a new mantel, recessed lighting, and white paint throughout the space. In the entryway, the front door was replaced, carpeting was removed, and the staircases up and down were fitted with new railings and refinished stair treads.

Challenges:

There was a top-line investment that the homeowners were able to make into their kitchen, and the timing with Covid supply-chain issues before and during construction put the project at risk to get to the finish line. The homeowners needed to trust the contractor to negotiate with suppliers to hold firm to their quotes and deliver; and the project was a smashing success.

Features:

  • Custom range hood built on-site flanked by white maple open shelving
  • Large brass pendants anchor the island as a focal point and tie into the brass cabinet hardware and black matte finish faucet
  • Custom cabinetry with ample floor-to-ceiling storage
  • Microwave drawer for easy access by all members of the family
  • Built-in coffee system

Outcomes:

A spacious and elegant kitchen with an open-concept living space that honors the home.

The space is now utilized more effectively, with the television mounted on the wall above the fireplace and a new sofa positioned for comfortable viewing.
