The homeowners reached out to us with a vision: to enhance the connection between their kitchen and dining space, making the stunning Pacific Northwest view the star of this beautiful mid-century kitchen remodel. Their passion for cooking and desire to create a welcoming space for large family gatherings drove this exciting transformation. One of the major drawbacks of the existing space was the low windows on the view side of the home. While these may have functioned well for those in the home under 5 ft, they were non-functional for those over 6 ft, who unfortunately were the ones who loved preparing meals.

Challenges & Solutions:

To create a more spacious environment, we removed the wall between the kitchen and dining area, enhancing the entertaining space and making room for a larger table for family gatherings. This wall contained electrical wires for the exterior blinds that provided sun shading from the western exposure. Due to the extensive glass on the exterior wall and structural framing, relocating the switch was challenging. We solved this by thickening the refrigerator panel wall, allowing us to keep the switches near their original location without compromising the space's aesthetic.

Updating the existing fireplace was essential to complement the home's new look. This upgrade ensured the fireplace fit seamlessly into the overall design and enhanced its visual appeal. However, a complication of keeping the existing structure meant that we needed a new point load for the roof that could not be contained inside a wall. Keeping the fireplace required a post that couldn't be hidden in a wall, but we successfully incorporated this into the design.

The Results:

Ensuring the space maintained clean lines and complemented the mid-century style of the home, we selected Quartzite countertops and natural wood elements with vertical grain fir to enhance the long, straight cabinetry. Extra attention to detail was made to ensure that everything looked perfectly symmetrical, enhancing the overall aesthetic appeal of the space. Intricate tile detailing around the windows preserved the clean lines and mid-century modern aesthetic. Painted steel mantels and a roof beam support post bring a sleek, modern element to the fireplace. Integrated natural wood with vertical grain cabinets draws the eye upward, creating a more spacious feel. A slated wall provided division between the kitchen and hallway spaces while maintaining transparency. Lighting played a pivotal role in enhancing the ambiance of the home. A sleek, elongated linear light was seamlessly integrated above the island, casting a warm and inviting glow. Throughout the space, Acculux can lights were strategically placed to infuse an air of elegance and sophistication, creating a harmonious blend of style and functionality.
