Inside and Out Addition

This home had served these clients well for over 20 years—but it was time to revitalize it with modern touches and functionality. While the kitchen was a priority, the owners (a couple with a dog) also sought a better entryway into the home, outdoor living space, and other improvements along with enhanced energy efficiency.

For the kitchen, the couple had a clear vision; the cabinetry was of particular importance, and we went through several iterations to arrive at a solution that was both visually appealing and appropriate for the space. Bright white with clean, classic lines, the cabinets make the kitchen feel light, airy, and refined. Enhanced storage was also a consideration, so we designed a pantry with butcher-block countertops, shelving, and additional cabinets.

To create a more welcoming entry, we transformed part of the home’s attached carport, which provided additional interior space as well.

Outside, a new composite deck with railings offers room to gather and connect with the natural surroundings, perfect for Northwest summer evenings. We also re-sided the entire house, giving it a fresh new look after decades of exposure to the weather.

Some of the most important improvements aren’t even visible, however. A peel-and-stick weather membrane adds energy efficiency; we installed insulation as well. And the new pantry is equipped with washer/dryer hookups so the couple can relocate the laundry room from the basement as they age in place.

It’s now a home that is ready for the next 20 years—and beyond.
