West Seattle Getaway Basement

A once non-functional, uneven, and dark basement with unfinished ceilings has been transformed into a welcoming space where the family can live comfortably and display their mementos from travels around the world.

Travel through Eastern Europe and Asia inspired elements into the home ranging from the German Schmear technique on the fireplace, the sleek black and white tile design in the bathroom and unique floating laundry shelves custom made from Monkeypod wood. Together, with the vision of the homeowners and creativity of the design team, each of these details helped to create an ideal living space.

To give the basement a creative and functional use of space, there were decisions regarding ductwork, room layout and upgrading of the laundry room to make before moving forward. Increasing overall efficiency and incorporating areas to display artifacts and memorabilia from travels is what drove this design concept.

Scope:

The laundry room was a top priority that addressed the need for more space, organization including storage and shelving, serving as an inviting space for the homeowners.

A fully functional bathroom was needed that comprised of a sleek and modern design that included a shower for guests. The black and white tile now compliments the teak vanity, black mirror, and aged brass accents.

The family room and sleeping space were completely redesigned to create an open area concept for the family to spend time together.

Additional work:

  1. Install a floating cork floor system
  2. Update the fireplace
  3. Build custom wall cabinetry

Challenges:

A loadbearing wall has been removed, which exposed height variations between slabs allowing two original rooms to become one large space. The existing ductwork was large and intrusive.

Custom cabinetry was needed to fit the new space and provide storage.

Solutions:

The uneven floors were made functional by creating a visual effect of continuity between rooms.
Rebuilt the ductwork to minimize intrusion.

Custom cabinetry was installed throughout to maximize storage. Monkeypod wood shelving was created by a local artist and friend, which ensured our custom laundry shelves were expertly executed within budget.

Results:

This space which was once disorderly and unusable is now fully functional providing organization solutions, sleek and stylish design, modern utilities, and an open space concept. This basement remodel serves as a reminder of past adventures from the families’ travels and provides a space where new memories can now be made.
